Amid the ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, Iran has expressed interest in having India serve as a mediator, signalling a potential new equation in international diplomacy. Iran believes India has strategic relations with the United States, Israel and Iran simultaneously, which could make it an effective mediator.

Iranian Ambassador to New Delhi Mohammad Fatahi said India's foreign policy is relatively balanced and dialogue-oriented. India's position as a major power in the Global South could also play a significant role in this regard. Iran believes India has a distinct credibility, particularly in prioritising diplomatic channels to reduce tensions.

The war, which began on February 28, originated from long-standing disputes over Iran's nuclear programme and missile development. The conflict has also significantly impacted the global energy market, with many countries facing economic pressure due to uncertainty in oil supply.

Meanwhile, amid growing international pressure, ceasefire initiatives have begun. Pakistan has been chosen as a mediator in this process, with a 15-point proposal sent to Tehran via Islamabad by Donald Trump's administration. Even as those talks proceed, Iran has indicated it also wishes to see India play a role, bringing diplomatic competition between South Asia's two rival nations to the forefront.
