Iranian flag torn down at London embassy during protest
Protests outside Iran's embassy in London escalated recently when a demonstrator climbed onto a balcony of the building, removed the flag of the Islamic Republic and replaced it with the pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun monarchist flag, witnesses said.
Demonstrators blocked Kensington Road and chanted slogans during the protest. London's Metropolitan Police said it deployed additional officers to manage the crowd and prevent further disorder, says the Mirror.
The demonstrations in Britain come amid widespread unrest in Iran, where authorities have launched a crackdown on protests.
At least 106 people have been killed and more than 2,300 detained during the unrest, according to reports. Iran's attorney general has warned that protesters would be charged as "enemies of God," a crime that carries the death penalty under Iranian law.
Iranian authorities have also cut phone and internet services in parts of the country, limiting the flow of information and making it difficult to assess the scale of the protests.
There have been reports that protesters in some areas have used petrol bombs and firearms to attack government buildings.
Internationally, the United States has voiced strong support for the protesters. US officials have warned Iran's leadership that Washington would respond "hard" if the killing of demonstrators continues. The US State Department cautioned the Iranian authorities not to "play games" with President Trump's warnings.
