Direct talks between Iran and the United States have begun in Oman, Iranian state television reported on Friday. At the same time, Tehran stated that it remains prepared for self-defense if necessary, while US President Donald Trump did not completely rule out the possibility of military action.

AFP from Muscat reported that this is the first direct dialogue between the two countries since last June, when the United States conducted airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities during a 12-day conflict with Israel. Previous rounds of negotiations had effectively stalled amid that confrontation.

The Iranian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US side is represented by Special envoy Steve Witkoff.
