Ireland has scripted history by securing their first-ever victory against India in international cricket. The Irish side pulled off a stunning 34-run win over a full-strength Indian team, who entered the match as back-to-back T20 World Cup champions.

In the first T20I of the two-match series held in Belfast, Ireland posted 182 runs in their allotted 20 overs before bowling India out for a mere 148 on Friday. This marks Ireland’s maiden victory over India in 12 attempts in international cricket.

Ireland headed into the clash severely depleted, missing five frontline pacers—including Josh Little, Mark Adair, and Curtis Campher—due to injuries. Consequently, two fast bombers made their international debuts in the opening fixture, and it was these debutants who tore through the world champions.

Despite a rocky start with the bat, Ireland managed a brilliant recovery. After being reduced to 51 for 4, newly appointed captain Lorcan Tucker and Gareth Delany steadied the ship with a vital 64-run partnership. Tucker scored 50 off 36 balls, while Delany contributed a brisk 49 off 32 balls to lay the foundation for a competitive total. Late in the innings, George Dockrell provided a crucial finish with a quickfire cameo of 19 runs off just 10 balls.

In reply, India started their chase aggressively but lost wickets at regular intervals. Abhishek Sharma raised hopes with a fiery 49 off just 20 deliveries before falling agonisingly short of his half-century. High-profile batters Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson failed to even reach double digits. With India reeling at 100 for 6, Shivam Dube and Axar Patel offered some resistance, but it was not enough to avert defeat.

With the ball, debutant Matt Hollard delivered a Player of the Match performance for Ireland, tearing through the Indian lineup with figures of 3 for 28. Another debutant, Indian-origin left-arm pacer Jay Mundra, also left a lasting impression by picking up 2 for 25.

For India, Harshit Rana was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets, while Prasidh Krishna endured a disappointing outing, conceding 57 runs in his 4 wicketless overs.

The second and final T20I of the series will be played at the same venue this coming Sunday, offering Ireland a golden opportunity to seal a historic series win.
