Is daily bathing really necessary? What experts say

Daily bathing is a common habit for many. However, health experts and researchers say there is limited evidence that bathing every day provides any additional health benefits. In fact, excessive bathing and soap use can damage the skin's natural moisture and defence mechanisms.

According to doctors, the skin harbours a natural community of microorganisms called the skin microbiome. Excessive soap, hot water and frequent bathing can disrupt this balance, leading to issues such as dryness, irritation and increased sensitivity. There is no exception, however, when it comes to regular handwashing, which remains crucial for preventing infections.

Many experts view daily bathing as a result of social and cultural changes. Sociologists say the trend gained momentum in the mid-20th century when access to running water, private bathrooms and showers became widespread. The advertising industry also promoted bathing not just as a matter of cleanliness but as a source of freshness, mental well-being and renewed energy, making it a social expectation over time.

The topic has also gained attention in recent years from public figures who openly speak about bathing less frequently. Actors such as Ashton Kutcher, Jonathan Ross and America Ferrera have shared their habits of not showering regularly. Environmental activist Donnachadh McCarthy has long advocated for reduced bathing, using a sponge-bath approach instead.

According to physician James Hamblin, negative perceptions about reduced bathing stem partly from limited understanding of the skin's natural microbiome. However, there is no single rule that applies to everyone regarding how often to bathe. Frequency may vary based on climate, physical activity, sweat levels, skin type and individual hygiene needs.

Experts suggest that instead of long daily showers out of habit, one can maintain cleanliness according to need. Showering after exercise or excessive sweating and regularly cleaning the armpits, groin and areas prone to odour is important. Avoiding excessively hot water and harsh soaps is also beneficial for the skin. Regardless of bathing frequency, it is essential to maintain the habit of washing hands with soap before and after meals and after using the toilet.
