Is hair perfume safe? The risks and better alternatives
A pleasant scent can add a fresh touch to your appearance, which is why many people spray perfume on their hair after a shower or before heading out. But using regular perfume directly on the hair too often may leave the hair and scalp dry or irritated.
Alcohol, commonly used in fragrances to help them dry quickly and retain their scent, can strip moisture from the hair with repeated use. This may leave hair rough, dry and more prone to tangling, frizz and breakage.
Fragrance ingredients can also irritate a sensitive scalp, potentially causing itching, dryness or a burning sensation. People with sensitive scalps should therefore check the ingredient list before using scented hair products.
Hair mists can be a better option for those who want their hair to smell fresh. They are formulated specifically for hair and are generally lighter than regular perfumes. Some also contain ingredients designed to help condition the hair.
A lightly scented hair serum is another option, particularly for people dealing with dryness or frizz. Leave-in conditioners can also help keep dry hair smooth while adding a mild fragrance.
If unpleasant hair odour is caused by sweat, excess oil or dirt, masking it with perfume is not the solution. A dry shampoo can temporarily absorb excess oil and provide a fresher feel, but it should not replace regular hair washing.
Before buying any scented hair product, check its ingredients and avoid products that cause itching, burning or excessive dryness. For a lasting fresh scent without unnecessarily drying the hair, products specifically formulated for hair, such as hair mists and lightly scented serums, are a more suitable choice.
