Israel has expanded its military operations in southern Lebanon, with its armed forces claiming to have captured the strategically significant historic Beaufort Castle. The military has also announced the start of a "large-scale" new operation in the region.

The development came to light on Sunday, May 31, when Israeli state broadcaster Kan published footage showing the Israeli flag being raised over Beaufort Castle. The fortress, built during the Crusader era, is located on a high hill near the town of Nabatieh, approximately 15 kilometres from the Lebanon-Israel border.

Lebanese authorities have not yet issued an immediate comment on the claim of the castle's capture.

Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee announced the launch of "Operation Northern Arrow" against Hezbollah in the Beaufort Ridge and Wadi al-Saluki areas of southern Lebanon. The goal of the operation is to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure and eliminate security threats near the border.

Adraee claimed that Israeli forces have crossed the Litani River and intensified operations further north, with preparations in place for broader military steps if necessary.

Analysts suggest that despite a ceasefire that came into effect on April 17, Israel's ongoing incursion may be one of the deepest military penetrations inside Lebanon in decades.

Beaufort Castle is a UNESCO-protected heritage site. It was under Israeli control for nearly 18 years before Israel withdrew its forces from Lebanon in 2000. If confirmed, the recapture of the castle would mark a significant military achievement for Israel in the ongoing conflict.
