Israel killed most journalists in 2025, 129 dead worldwide: CPJ
The year 2025 has turned out to be particularly bloody for journalists worldwide. The Committee to Protect Journalists has reported that a total of 129 journalists and media workers were killed throughout the year, with two-thirds losing their lives at the hands of Israeli forces and security personnel.
In a report published on Wednesday, the New York-based organisation said this marks the second consecutive year of record journalist killings. In over three decades of data collection, 2025 has emerged as the deadliest year so far.
According to the report, 86 of the 129 killed were killed by Israel, with over 60 per cent being Palestinian journalists.
CPJ further reported that journalist deaths also increased in Ukraine and Sudan in 2025 compared to 2024. Drone strikes were specifically mentioned in 39 incidents.
Of these, Israel killed 28 in Gaza through drone strikes. In Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group killed five journalists in drone attacks. Russian drone strikes killed four journalists in Ukraine.
The report stated that journalists have lost their lives not only in conflict zones but also for reporting on corruption.
CPJ said the security situation for journalists is becoming increasingly perilous, with media workers operating in conflict zones and countries experiencing political instability facing the highest risk.
