An Israeli airstrike in the Yemeni capital Sanaa has killed Ahmed Ghalib al-Rahwi, the prime minister of the Houthi-controlled government, along with several other senior officials, Houthi authorities confirmed on Saturday (August 30).

The strike, which took place on Thursday, marks the first known Israeli attack targeting top Houthi leadership, reports Reuters.

Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, confirmed the deaths in a televised statement but did not specify the number of casualties or whether the group’s defense minister was among them.

Israel’s military said on Friday that the strike targeted senior military figures within the Iran-aligned group, including the army chief of staff and defense minister. It did not directly confirm Rahwi’s death.

Rahwi, appointed as prime minister last year, held a largely ceremonial role within the Houthi political structure and was not involved in military operations.

Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Miftah is expected to assume leadership responsibilities.
