Israeli forces intercepts Gaza aid Flotilla: Organisers
Israeli forces intercepted an international flotilla attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza late Wednesday, with organisers reporting that several boats were boarded as they approached the besieged territory.
The mission’s organisers, the Global Sumud Flotilla, said “multiple vessels were illegally intercepted and boarded by Israeli Occupation Forces in international waters.” They added that communications between vessels were jammed ahead of the operation, disrupting live video streams and coordination.
The flotilla, comprising more than 40 civilian boats and some 500 passengers — including parliamentarians, lawyers, and activists such as Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg — had set sail to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. The fleet was located about 70 nautical miles from the enclave when the interception occurred.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing around 20 Israeli naval vessels approaching the flotilla. Video footage streamed from one boat showed passengers in life vests sitting on deck as they prepared for the boarding. It was not immediately clear how many of the flotilla’s vessels were intercepted, though some passengers said their boats continued toward Gaza.
The Israeli military did not respond to requests for comment. Earlier, however, the foreign ministry said the navy had warned the flotilla it was entering an “active combat zone” and violating what it called a “lawful blockade.” Israel reiterated its position that any aid destined for Gaza should be delivered through established humanitarian channels.
Organisers of the flotilla remained defiant, vowing in a statement that their mission “will continue undeterred.”
