Israel's PM Netanyahu pledges support Argentina in World Cup final
Ahead of the FIFA World Cup final, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly declared his support for Argentina, saying he believes most Israelis will also be cheering for Lionel Messi's side in the title clash against Spain.
A day before the final at New York–New Jersey Stadium, Netanyahu met Argentina's ambassador to Israel, Rabbi Shimon Axel Wahnish, where the two discussed the highly anticipated showdown.
During the meeting, Ambassador Wahnish presented Netanyahu with an Argentina national team jersey and played an audio message from Argentine President Javier Milei.
In the message, Milei thanked the Israeli premier for backing Argentina, saying, "You are my friend and have always supported us. I'm delighted to know you're supporting Argentina because of me."
Responding to the message, Netanyahu said, "Javier, you are a friend—a true friend. We stand with you. We support Argentina in many areas, and we will do so tomorrow as well. Good luck."
Netanyahu later reaffirmed his support while speaking with Ambassador Wahnish.
"I don't hide the fact that I'm an Argentina supporter. I believe the majority of Israeli citizens are also supporting Argentina. Good luck. Vamos Argentina," he said.
Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, will take the field aiming to defend their World Cup crown and add another title to their illustrious history, while Spain are chasing their first World Cup triumph since lifting the trophy in 2010.
The close ties between the current governments of Argentina and Israel have been evident since Javier Milei took office, with the Argentine president repeatedly expressing strong public support for Israel.
