Ivory Coast stun France, Iraq hold Spain in Pre-World Cup friendlies
World Cup preparations took a surprise turn as European giants France and Spain were both shaken in their latest international friendlies on Thursday night (June 4).
France suffered a 2-1 defeat against Ivory Coast, while Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Iraq in separate warm-up matches ahead of the tournament.
France started strongly and took the lead in the first half through a goal from young midfielder Rayan Cherki, dominating possession and control for much of the opening 45 minutes.
However, the second half saw a dramatic shift as Ivory Coast capitalized on defensive errors from the French side. Nicolas Pépé provided the assist for Guéla Doué to level the score in the 53rd minute, before Amad Diallo struck the winning goal later in the half following another incisive move involving Doué.
Doué, who also registered an assist, emerged as the standout performer. Notably, he is the elder brother of Paris Saint-Germain youngster Désiré Doué. The result marked Ivory Coast’s first-ever victory over France and ended France’s nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
France will face Northern Ireland in their final warm-up match on Monday ahead of the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Spain also failed to secure a win in their final preparation game, drawing 1-1 with Iraq at Estadio de Riazor in La Coruña. The European champions took an early lead but were unable to maintain their advantage as a resilient Iraqi side fought back to level the score.
