The candidate of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency has announced a boycott of the ongoing general election vote, alleging widespread irregularities.

The decision was made public during polling hours on Thursday (April 9), with Sherpur district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Hafizur Rahman confirming the move.

He said the candidate withdrew from the race after assessing the situation and alleged vote irregularities, adding that further details would be disclosed at a press briefing scheduled for 3:00pm.

The constituency, comprising Sreebardi and Jhenaigati upazilas, has 128 polling centres for 4,13,377 registered voters.

Of these, 28 centres have been identified as “vulnerable,” with additional security measures in place.

No major untoward incidents were reported in the initial hours of voting, with voters seen casting ballots peacefully amid a strong presence of law enforcement agencies.
