Japan congratulates Khalilur Rahman on UNGA presidency

The Embassy of Japan in Dhaka has congratulated Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In a message, the embassy expressed hope for his success in undertaking this important responsibility and looked forward to further deepening the Japan-Bangladesh Strategic Partnership through closer collaboration at the UN and other multilateral forums.

The election was held on Tuesday, June 2, at the UN headquarters in New York. Dr Khalilur secured 99 votes out of 190 cast, while his opponent received 91 votes. No votes were invalidated, and no one abstained from voting.

Dr Khalilur will assume his responsibilities as UNGA president when the session begins in September. He will serve a one-year term in this capacity.
