Joty steps down from T20 captaincy

Nigar Sultana Joty has stepped down from the T20 captaincy of the Bangladesh women’s cricket team. Chairperson of the women’s cricket committee Rafiqul Islam Babu has confirmed the matter to the media.

Joty informed BCB president Tamim Iqbal and the chairperson of the women’s cricket committee of her decision through email. She took the decision to step down from leadership with the aim of focusing more on batting and wicketkeeping. However, Jyoti will continue as captain of the ODI team. She will step down from the T20 captaincy after the Asian Games.

Joty formally informed the board of her decision through a letter from Japan on Tuesday. BCB president Tamim Iqbal has accepted her decision.

Joty had been leading Bangladesh in both formats since taking over the leadership of the T20 team in 2022. The most notable success under her captaincy came in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Bangladesh secured a win in the World Cup after a decade by beating Scotland. Joty played an important role with bat and gloves in that match as well as throughout the tournament. She scored 104 runs in four innings and also took seven dismissals behind the wicket.

However, a lack of consistency has been seen in Bangladesh’s performance under Joty’s leadership in recent times. After remaining undefeated champions in the World Cup qualifier at the beginning of 2026, Bangladesh lost the series 2-1 to Sri Lanka at home. Mixed results also came in the tri-nation series with Scotland and the Netherlands.

Questions were raised about Joty’s leadership after securing only two wins in five matches in the World Cup. Eventually she took the decision to step down from the leadership of the T20 team.
