Journalist Monjurul Alam Panna released on bail

Journalist Monjurul Alam Panna has been released on bail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

He was released from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur around 5 pm on Wednesday.

Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-1, Abu Noor Md. Reza, said that journalist Monjurul Alam Panna got bail from the High Court in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Panna was released around 5pm on Wednesday soon after thr bail documents reached the jail.

After his release, his family members took him away in the evening, the jail superintendent said.

A platform called 'Mancha 71' organized a roundtable discussion programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on August 28 under the title 'Our Great War of Liberation and the Constitution of Bangladesh'. former minister Abdul Latif Siddique and journalist Monjurul Alam Panna participated in the programme. At one point during the event, a group of people marched into the DRU auditorium and attacked the organizers and participants of the event. They tore the banners of the discussion event and blocked the participants of the discussion. Later, the blockers handed over at least 16 people, including Latif Siddique , DU professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Karzon, and journalist Monjurul Alam, to the police.

On August 28, a case was filed against Abdul Latif Siddique, Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Karzon, journalist Panna, and 16 others under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Amirul Islam, a sub-inspector (SI) of the capital's Shahbagh police station, filed the case as the plaintiff. When the bail application of Abdul Latif Siddique and journalist Monjurul Alam Panna in this case was not granted by the lower court, they applied for bail in the High Court.
