Kane Williamson puts curtain down on 16-year career on international cricket

New Zealand batting great and former captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished 16-year career that ranks among the finest in the country's cricketing history.

Widely regarded as one of the modern game's most accomplished and respected cricketers, Williamson leaves the international stage as New Zealand's highest run-scorer across all formats. The right-hander amassed 19,346 runs in 378 international appearances, including 48 centuries and six double hundreds.

Williamson captained New Zealand from 2016 to 2024, overseeing one of the most successful periods in the team's history. Under his leadership, the Black Caps reached two ICC Cricket World Cup finals and secured their maiden ICC World Test Championship title in 2021.

The 35-year-old had already stepped away from T20 Internationals in November last year. Announcing his decision to retire from all international cricket, Williamson said the move came after considerable reflection.

“I have been thinking about this decision for some time. Over the last few days, it has become clear to me that this is the right moment,” Williamson said.

“Representing New Zealand has always been a privilege and a passion. I have always tried to give everything I had in every match. When that hunger is no longer at the same level, it is the right time to step aside.”

Beyond his team achievements, Williamson enjoyed a glittering individual career. He was named ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2015 and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2019. He also won New Zealand Cricket’s highest individual honour, the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal, a record four times.

His retirement means he will play no further part in New Zealand’s ongoing Test series against England. New Zealand Cricket has yet to announce a replacement for the remainder of the series.

Williamson’s departure marks the end of an era for New Zealand cricket. Revered for his composure, consistency and leadership, he leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond statistics, having established himself as one of the most influential figures in the history of the game.
