Kane's brace turns the tide for England
England staged a brilliant comeback in their World Cup Round of 32 match against DR Congo, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. The African side, who once dreamed of a major upset, now face the threat of elimination.
The match at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium started perfectly for DR Congo. In the seventh minute, Bryan Sipenga capitalised on an England defensive error to fire his side into a 1-0 lead. England struggled to find their rhythm after the unexpected setback.
Despite dominating possession and attacks in the first half, England could not find the net. Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi denied several efforts from Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane, becoming the hero of the first half with two brilliant saves from Bellingham's headers.
England increased their attacking intensity after the break. Their pressure finally paid off in the 75th minute when Kane headed home from Anthony Gordon's perfect cross from the left flank.
The equaliser lifted England's spirits, and they continued to pile on the pressure. Their persistence was rewarded late in regulation time when Kane struck again to make it 2-1.
After the second goal, England took full control of the match, with Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Elliot Anderson dominating the midfield. DR Congo, who played brilliantly in the first half, struggled to cope with England's sustained pressure.
Statistics showed England's dominance in possession, attacks, entries into the opposition box and chances created. DR Congo relied mainly on quick counter-attacks but could not maintain that momentum in the second half.
At the time of writing, the score stood at England 2-1 DR Congo. If the result holds, England will face Mexico in the last 16.
