Kathmandu remains under a state of emergency following widespread protests in Nepal’s capital, reports Indian Express.

Despite a curfew imposed on Friday (September 12), shops and markets continued to operate, while public transport remained suspended.

The Nepalese military is working to gradually restore banking services and resume operations at the Supreme Court, which have been disrupted by the unrest.

The protest movement has fractured over the choice of an interim head of government. Initially, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was supported, but concerns over her age have led some to propose Kulman Ghising, head of Nepal’s power department, as an alternative.

However, protesters continue to demand the dissolution of the current parliament.

The violence from the protests has claimed at least 34 lives and injured over 1,300 people, according to the Nepal Health Department. Additionally, around 13,000 prisoners have escaped from jails across 77 districts, with many later captured near the Indian border.

As the situation intensifies, authorities face increasing challenges in restoring order in Kathmandu.
