The 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is being observed today with nationwide tributes, cultural programmes, and discussions celebrating his enduring legacy of rebellion, equality, humanity, and secularism.

Widely known as the “Rebel Poet,” Nazrul remains one of the most influential figures in Bengali literature and music, inspiring generations through his powerful writings against injustice, discrimination, and communalism.

To mark the occasion, elaborate programmes have been organised in Dhaka, Trishal in Mymensingh, Cumilla, Chattogram, and several other districts across the country. The celebrations include discussion sessions, poetry recitations, Nazrul songs, and cultural performances.

This year’s main national event is being held at the Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University and Nazrul Academy in Trishal, a place deeply connected to the poet’s memories. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formally inaugurated the celebrations and announced that the next one year will be observed nationwide as “Nazrul Year.”

In the capital, Bangla Academy is hosting a special seminar, Nazrul Award ceremony, and cultural programmes, while Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is concluding its three-day festival titled “Poet of Rebellion, Poet of Life” with performances by renowned artists.

Various educational institutions, social organisations, and cultural groups are also observing the day through separate events, including book-reading sessions, essay competitions, and exhibitions.

Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on May 24, 1899, in Churulia village of West Bengal’s Bardhaman district in India. His fearless voice against oppression and his message of equality and humanity continue to inspire Bengalis around the world.
