UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing intensifying internal pressure after a wave of resignations and growing calls for his removal within the Labour Party.

Four Parliamentary Private Secretaries (PPSs) have resigned from their posts, while around 70 Labour MPs in the House of Commons are now reportedly demanding that Starmer step down.

The resignations come amid mounting dissatisfaction following the Labour Party’s poor performance in last week’s local elections, which triggered open dissent within the party ranks.

Among those who resigned are aides linked to senior cabinet figures, including Melanie Ward, Melanie Ward (deputy PM’s aide), Jo Morris (health secretary’s aide), Tom Rutland (environment secretary’s aide), and Naushabah Khan (Cabinet Office aide). The departing PPSs said they believe Starmer is no longer the right leader to take Labour into the next general election, expected in 2029, and called for a swift leadership contest.

In his resignation statement, PPS Tom Rutland said the Prime Minister had “lost authority not only among Labour MPs but across the country,” adding that he did not believe Starmer could regain public trust.

Melanie Ward, in a post on X, acknowledged Starmer’s contributions but pointed to the recent election results as evidence of deeper political concern within the party.

Earlier this week, Starmer urged colleagues to give him time to “reset and correct course,” but the latest developments suggest limited support for his appeal.

Speaking to supporters in London, Starmer warned that a leadership challenge at this stage would only create “chaos,” while pledging to adopt a more assertive approach in the future.
