Kejriwal calls for march to Modi's residence over ethanol-blended fuel

Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal has intensified his protest against ethanol-blended fuel. He announced he will submit a memorandum signed by over two lakh people to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence on August 4, alongside a march in Delhi.

Addressing a national public hearing on Saturday, Kejriwal claimed public concern over ethanol-mixed fuel is rising rapidly. He said he would personally deliver the memorandum to Modi's residence at noon on August 4, accompanied by 100 volunteers willing to face arrest or lathi-charge.

Kejriwal challenged the government to an open debate with experts if it insists the fuel is safe. He accused the government of avoiding criticism instead of holding a transparent discussion.

The BJP has rejected the allegations. Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra challenged Kejriwal to provide evidence of at least 100 cases of engine damage caused by ethanol-blended fuel.

The debate over gradually increasing ethanol content in petrol has been ongoing for months. Critics argue it increases fuel costs for many vehicles and poses long-term engine risks. The government maintains the policy is environmentally friendly and reduces dependence on imported fuel.

Kejriwal also alleged other interests are behind the policy, questioning the involvement of Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari's sons in the ethanol business. He also claimed the government is rushing the policy due to a potential trade deal with the US. The central government has not yet responded to these allegations.

Kejriwal has put forward three demands: both regular and ethanol-blended petrol must be available at all pumps; petrol prices must be reduced; and ethanol prices must also be lowered.

Political analysts say the ethanol issue has now evolved beyond fuel policy into a major political debate over economic policy, inflation and the cost of living. Opposition parties are using it to build public opinion against the Centre.

Security measures in Delhi are likely to be tightened in view of the protest. Similar programmes in the past have seen police action and arrests. A similar situation is expected this time.
