US President Donald Trump has claimed that he saved Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei from "a shameful and humiliating death" during recent escalations in the Middle East—but received no thanks in return, reports BBC.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday (June 27), Trump wrote: "I saved Khamenei from a very heinous and humiliating death, but he didn’t even thank me." He also warned that any future move by Iran toward developing nuclear weapons would be met with further military strikes.

The remarks appear to be in response to Khamenei's recent statement claiming victory for Iran in the 12-day war with Israel. Trump dismissed the Iranian leader's declaration as "false and foolish," and said he had blocked a joint Israeli-US plan to assassinate Khamenei during the conflict.

"I knew exactly where he was hiding," Trump added, referring to the period of hostilities earlier this month that saw dozens killed on both sides and a number of key military and civilian targets hit.

Iran has sharply rejected Trump's comments. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghachi called Trump's remarks "disrespectful and unacceptable."

"If President Trump sincerely wants to make a deal, he must stop using disrespectful language towards Ayatollah Khamenei and refrain from hurting the feelings of his millions of followers," Araghachi said.
