The Netherlands have suffered a major blow hot on the heels of their dramatic penalty shootout defeat against Morocco in the Round of 32. Just a day after the loss, head coach Ronald Koeman resigned from his position.

After a goalless stalemate through regulation and extra time, the match was decided by penalties, where luck was not on the side of the Dutch. This defeat against Morocco brought an abrupt and unexpected end to their international campaign.

Koeman announced his resignation via a statement on his Instagram account on Tuesday (June 30). He stated that he takes full responsibility for the team's failure to meet its goals, adding that the exit has caused him deep personal pain. He remarked that it was only natural for him to shoulder the blame for such an outcome.

Statistics show that this bitter penalty shootout exit marks a recurring heartbreak for the Dutch squad. However, for a team that historically expects deep tournament runs—having reached the quarter-finals in Qatar four years ago—this early exit was highly unexpected.

Koeman, the former Barcelona and Ajax defender, took charge of the Dutch national team for a second stint after the 2022 World Cup, succeeding Louis van Gaal. Under his management, the Netherlands reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024, which was their first major tournament semi-final appearance since 2014.
