Kohli shatters two ODI records as India crush West Indies

Virat Kohli smashed a blistering 139 off 88 balls and rewrote two ODI records as India chased down West Indies’ 296 with ease in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday (September 27).

India reached 299 for two in just 41.4 overs, with captain Shubman Gill also hitting a century as the hosts completed a dominant eight-wicket victory.

Kohli became the fastest batter to reach 15,000 ODI runs and also set the record for the most ODI runs scored on home soil. His century came off 78 balls and featured 11 fours and five sixes.

Gill made 110 after being dropped early in his innings, while Rohit Sharma contributed 32 before throwing away a promising start.

Earlier, Justin Greaves struck a superb 101 to anchor West Indies’ 295 for seven. He shared a 135-run opening stand with John Campbell, who made 62.

Kuldeep Yadav led India’s bowling attack with four wickets, including two in successive deliveries, while Amir Jangoo’s unbeaten 58 off 43 balls helped West Indies push their total towards 300.

But the target proved no match for India’s formidable top order as Kohli and Gill powered the hosts to victory with more than eight overs to spare.
