Kolkata flooded by rain ahead of Durga Puja, 7 dead
Heavy overnight rainfall has caused severe waterlogging in Kolkata, the capital of India’s West Bengal state, leaving Seven people dead in related incidents. The downpour and subsequent flooding have disrupted road transport, rail, metro, and flight services across the city.
The weather office has warned of further rainfall. Indian news outlet NDTV reported the situation on Tuesday (September 23).
According to NDTV, five people died in separate incidents caused by the incessant rain in Kolkata and its surrounding areas. Waterlogging occurred across multiple parts of the city, including Beniapukur, Kalikapur, Netajinagar, Gariahat, and Ekbalpur — all located mainly in central and southern Kolkata.
The flooding has severely disrupted traffic flow, with suburban rail and metro services also affected. Water has entered numerous low-lying homes, leaving many residents struggling. Several schools announced closure today.
Data from NDTV shows the southern and eastern areas of the city were hit the hardest. According to Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Garia Kamdahari recorded 332 mm of rainfall within a few hours, followed by Jodhpur Park with 285 mm, Kalighat with 280 mm, Topsia with 275 mm, and Ballygunge with 264 mm.
The meteorological department said the rainfall was caused by a depression over the Bay of Bengal. Residents have been advised to remain prepared for further downpours.
The timing has sparked concern as the heavy rain comes just ahead of the Durga Puja festivities. Preparations for the puja pandals, which attract visitors from around the world, are at their final stages, but many of the structures are now at risk of damage due to the continuous rainfall.
