Late drama costs Inter Miami three points against Atlanta

Inter Miami twice took the lead against Atlanta United but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw after a late penalty denied them victory in an eventful MLS clash on Sunday (September 6).

Lionel Messi set up Casemiro for the opener in the 32nd minute, curling in a corner that the Brazilian midfielder headed home. Atlanta responded three minutes later through Miguel Almirón.

Miami regained the lead just before halftime when Luis Suárez finished from Telasco Segovia’s pass to make it 2-1.

The hosts appeared on course for victory until Atlanta were awarded a penalty in the 87th minute. Breel Embolo converted from the spot to level the game and earn the visitors a point.

Messi remained heavily involved in attack but could not find the net. The draw came after his outstanding four-goal, one-assist performance against Montreal in Miami’s previous match.

The result leaves Inter Miami on 43 points from 23 matches, second in the Eastern Conference. Nashville FC lead the conference with 53 points from the same number of games.
