Lautaro converts from the spot as Argentina extend lead over Jordan
Argentina tightened their grip on the match by taking a commanding 2-0 lead over Jordan in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J encounter, with Lautaro Martínez converting a penalty after Giovani Lo Celso's first-half opener.
The reigning world champions dominated from the outset, controlling possession and pinning Jordan deep inside their own half. Although the Middle Eastern side adopted a defensive approach, it struggled to cope with Argentina's relentless attacking pressure.
After a Jordanian defender was booked in the 17th minute, Argentina intensified their attacks and broke the deadlock two minutes later. Giovani Lo Celso capped off a well-worked move in the 19th minute to put Lionel Scaloni's side in front.
Argentina continued to dictate the tempo after the opening goal, maintaining control in midfield and creating a series of chances, while Jordan failed to produce a meaningful response.
The pressure paid off again when Julián Álvarez was brought down inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a spot-kick. Lautaro Martínez calmly converted the penalty to double Argentina's advantage, with the Inter Milan striker netting his first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Even after taking a two-goal lead, Argentina showed no signs of easing off. Quick passing through midfield, attacks from both flanks and an aggressive high press kept Jordan pinned back, preventing them from building any sustained attacks.
