Legendary Photographer Raghu Rai passes away
Renowned Indian photographer Raghu Rai has passed away at the age of 83, his family confirmed on Sunday (April 26).
He breathed his last early in this morning in Delhi, according to Indian media reports.
Rai’s career spanned more than five decades, during which he emerged as one of the most influential photojournalists in South Asia.
Initially trained as a civil engineer, he later turned to photography, a decision that defined his legacy.
He was introduced to the camera at the age of 23 through his elder brother and went on to build a distinguished career as a photographer and editor. His work captured the diversity, social realities and everyday life across India with remarkable depth and sensitivity.
Rai was widely known for his portraits of iconic figures, including former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, spiritual leader Dalai Lama, Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, and acclaimed filmmaker Satyajit Ray. His lens also documented humanitarian figures such as Mother Teresa.
His contribution extended beyond portraiture, notably capturing historic moments including the Bangladesh Liberation War, earning him international acclaim.
In recognition of his contribution to photography, Rai received numerous national and international awards, including India’s prestigious Padma Shri in 1972.
His last rites are scheduled to be held later today at Lodhi Road crematorium in Delhi.
