Legendary singer Asha Bhosle passes away
Reputed Indian singer Asha Bhosle passed away while undergoing treatment at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday (April 12). She was 92 years old at the time of her death.
She was admitted to the hospital due to heart and respiratory problems on Saturday. According to hospital sources, she had been ill for several months due to various complications related to old age. She was taken to the ICU when her condition deteriorated, reports Hindustan Times.
Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the death. The family said that her last rites are scheduled to be held tomorrow, Monday.
Asha Bhosle was born in 1933 to the famous Mangeshkar family of India. She started her music career at the age of nine and recorded her first film song in 1943. Later, she established a strong position in Bollywood in the 1950s.
Like her elder sister, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, she made a remarkable contribution to Indian film music. However, she created a separate identity with her own unique voice and singing style.
Although she was initially known for cabaret and modern style songs, later her skills were revealed in ghazals, classical and various types of songs. Especially the ghazals in the film 'Umrao Jaan' took her to new heights.
In her long career, she won several national and international recognitions, including the Filmfare Award seven times. 'Dil Chij Kya Hai' and 'Mera Kuch Saman' are among her popular songs.
In her personal life, she first married Ganapatrao Bhosle and later tied the knot with music director Rahul Devvarman in 1980.
Artists and fans expressed grief that her death marked the end of an era in the world of Indian music.
