Let traffic police return to duty

The government of Bangladesh fell five days ago because of the student uprising. Meanwhile, public life has started to return to normal. The number of vehicles on the road is increasing. But the operation of the traffic police has not yet started. Students are still controlling traffic on many busy roads countrywide. Their initiative is commendable. But, how long? The traffic police should take the control right now.

Amid the ongoing situation, some traffic police started their operations on Monday. Students are also cooperating them. But as soon as possible the traffic police should take full control over the roads. Students will have to go back to their educational institutions as such practices are casting adverse impact on their studies. Students are volunteering, but they are not trained. As a result, they often have to struggle on busy roads. Chaos was seen on many busy streets of the capital on Monday. Apart from that, some of the common man's arguments are also happening with the students. Because, students are reluctant to accept even the slightest mistake. If this continues, passengers and drivers will soon lock horn with the students.

Many people have shown sympathy for the students in the ongoing situation. They fed them and bought them umbrellas. But, it must be accepted that if this continues without administrative measures, the law and order situation will soon be disturbed. Now in the changed situation, people are also realizing that along with police activities, traffic police activities also need to be started vigorously.

Before the fall of the government, there were violent clashes between the students and the police. Many students were killed. Many policemen were also killed. The students are angry with the excessive use of force by the police. As a result, the law enforcers panicked and left the police stations. Interim Government Home Affairs Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain ordered the policemen to return to their respective police stations by Thursday. The activities of most of the police stations have also started. Before joining the service, the police have taken an oath - they will work as a friend of the people and will not get involved with any more irregularities and corruption.

According to the information received from the police headquarters, out of the 639 police stations of the country, the activities of 538 have started till 3pm on Sunday. A total of 84 out of 110 police stations in various metropolitan areas and 454 out of 529 police stations in the district have started operations which is a positive sign.

We want the law and order situation to be normalized in the country soon. Many are suffering from insecurity in the current situation. This is the responsibility of the state to provide security to its citizens. It should be remembered that a certain political party has fallen, the governing system of the country has not collapsed. The policy makers of the interim government must understand this.
