Lionel Messi becomes owner of Spanish club UE Cornellà
Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has entered club ownership, acquiring historic Catalan side UE Cornellà, the club confirmed in an official statement.
The Inter Miami captain’s move is seen as part of a long-term vision to invest in grassroots football development, particularly in a region closely tied to his former club FC Barcelona.
Founded in 1951, UE Cornellà has built a reputation as a strong talent hub in Spanish football. Several notable players, including Jordi Alba, David Raya and Javi Puado, have emerged from its academy system.
Messi has long expressed interest in youth development. His hosting of the U-16 “Messi Cup” in Miami last December signaled his intent to expand involvement beyond playing.
In a statement, the club said Messi’s arrival as owner is expected to bring “strategic vision and long-term planning” aimed at transforming both sporting and institutional structures.
The move marks a new chapter in Messi’s career as he transitions into football leadership off the pitch.
