Liton Das hits 6th Test ton as Bangladesh batting collapse
Liton Das played a magnificent innings amidst a batting collapse, holding one end together as wickets fell around him to score his sixth Test century.
On the first day of the second Test against Pakistan in Sylhet on Saturday, May 16, Bangladesh's top-order batting was disappointing. The hosts were under immense pressure at 116 for 6. Amidst the ruins, Liton built a resistance.
The experienced batter reached the three-figure mark off 135 balls. At the end of 70.2 overs, Bangladesh's first innings score was 247 for 8. Liton remained unbeaten on 103, with Shariful Islam at the other end.
Bangladesh's innings started like a nightmare. Opener Joy departed for a duck on the second ball of the innings, caught in the slips. Debutant Tanzid Hasan followed, scoring 26 off 34 balls.
Mominul Haque and Najmul Hossain Shanto attempted some resistance but failed to play big innings. Mominul was out as the third wicket for 63. Shanto fell for 29, caught in the slips.
Experienced Mushfiqur Rahim's departure for 23 put Bangladesh under further pressure. Mehidy Hasan Miraz followed, out for just 4.
During the team's tough time, Taijul Islam provided some support to Liton, scoring 16 off 40 balls, surviving crucial time. Taskin Ahmed also couldn't stay long.
Pakistan's Mohammad Abbas and Khurram Shahzad bowled brilliantly, keeping the Bangladeshi batters under pressure from the start in overcast conditions.
