Liverpool begin EPL season with dramatic win
Liverpool kicked off the new English Premier League season with a thrilling win, coming from behind to defeat Bournemouth 4-2 at Anfield on Friday night, even after surrendering a two-goal lead.
The match began with a tribute to 28-year-old Liverpool star Diego Jota, who recently passed away in a road accident, along with André Silva, who died in the same crash. Fans displayed banners, flags, and jerseys in their memory, and a minute of silence was observed at the start of the game.
Liverpool started the match strongly. However, Bournemouth’s Ghanaian forward Antony Semenyo kept the game competitive. In the 37th minute, Hugo Ekitike put Liverpool ahead. After halftime, Cody Gakpo, assisted by Ekitike, doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 49th minute. It seemed like Liverpool would comfortably secure the three points.
The drama continued as Semenyo endured racial abuse in the first half, forcing a brief pause in the game. He made a strong comeback in the second half, scoring twice—first in the 64th minute and then 12 minutes later—leaving Liverpool fans shocked and the match tense at Anfield.
Ultimately, Liverpool prevailed. Substitute Federico Chiesa scored a stunning volley in the 82nd minute, and Mohamed Salah sealed the victory with a goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Salah also marked his ninth consecutive season opener goal for Liverpool in the Premier League.
