Lost power due to anti-India stance: KP Sharma Oli
Former Prime Minister of Nepal, KP Sharma Oli, has claimed that his removal from office was the direct result of his strong anti-India stance and his efforts to assert Nepal’s sovereignty. Oli made the remarks in a letter addressed to his party's General Secretary, a day after stepping down amid nationwide protests.
Oli resigned on September 9, following intense demonstrations led primarily by the country’s Gen-Z population. In the wake of his resignation, rumors circulated that he had fled the country. However, it has been confirmed that Oli remains in Nepal and is currently staying at the Shivapuri Army Barracks.
In his letter, Oli explicitly blamed India for his political downfall. Citing the growing unrest and restrictions on social media platforms, he said:
“If I had not opposed India’s policies, I might have been able to hold onto power.”
Oli reiterated his controversial claim that Lord Ram was not born in Ayodhya, India, but in Nepal—a statement that previously sparked widespread criticism. He insisted that this position, along with other nationalistic policies, contributed to the pressure for his resignation.
“I may be stubborn by nature, but without that, I would have surrendered to challenges long ago,” Oli wrote. “It was out of that same resolve that I demanded all social media platforms operating in Nepal comply with our national laws and register locally.”
The former Prime Minister also doubled down on Nepal’s territorial claims over Limpiyadhura, Kalapani, and Lipulekh—disputed regions on the India-Nepal border.
“Had I compromised on these issues, I could have chosen an easier path and received many benefits,” he stated. “But I gave everything for the nation. Power or prestige was never my priority.”
Oli concluded that the crisis leading to his resignation was ultimately rooted in his efforts to defend Nepal's sovereignty and challenge India's regional dominance.
