French President Emmanuel Macron is under mounting pressure to either resign or call a snap parliamentary election as the nation grapples with political chaos that has seen five prime ministers resign in less than two years.

The 47-year-old centrist has repeatedly affirmed he intends to serve his full second term, which runs until 2027. However, calls for his resignation—once confined to political fringes—have entered mainstream discourse amid what many describe as one of the most severe crises in the Fifth Republic since its establishment in 1958.

On Tuesday, as outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu conducted last-ditch talks to form a new government, Macron’s first premier in 2017, Édouard Philippe, urged the president to consider stepping aside. Speaking to RTL radio, Philippe stated that Macron should “leave in an orderly manner” to pave the way for resolving the political deadlock.
