Mamata Banerjee detained in Delhi during protest demanding CEC’s removal
Former West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal were detained by Delhi Police on Saturday (October 10) during protests demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Banerjee was detained outside her Delhi residence after staging a sit-in with party leaders, refusing to leave despite police instructions to disperse, Indian media reported.
The protest was linked to allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
A separate rally demanding Kumar’s resignation had been planned at Jantar Mantar, but police denied permission, citing security concerns and procedural issues.
Authorities deployed around 25,000 police and paramilitary personnel across the capital and imposed restrictions at 45 metro stations to prevent the gathering.
Reports on the number of people detained varied, with some media outlets citing around 500 arrests and others reporting more than 1,000.
However, the authorities had not immediately clarified whether the detained leaders would be released or face legal action.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the opposition protest as insignificant.
