Mamata’s niece’s hanging body recovered
Police have recovered the hanging body of Brishti Mukhopadhyay, niece of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Her body was recovered from their own house at Kusumba village in Rampurhat of Birbhum on Tuesday afternoon.
Brishti is the daughter of Nihar Mukhopadhyay, maternal cousin of Mamata Banerjee. Rampurhat police have recovered her body and sent it to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital.
Police’s preliminary assumption is that Brishti may have committed suicide. However, the reason why she took such a step is still not known. Rampurhat police have started an investigation to know the exact cause of death.
Brishti’s job was cancelled in March 2023 on the direction of the Calcutta High Court on charges of irregularities in the recruitment process of the School Service Commission. She was working as a clerk at Bolpur High School.
Her father Nihar Mukhopadhyay had then claimed that his daughter was good in studies and had got the job on her own merit. He had also claimed that he had not done any kind of lobbying anywhere for his daughter’s job.
A divorce case of Brishti was ongoing recently. Family sources said she was also mentally stressed over this. As a result, questions have arisen whether she was under pressure due to losing the job, the divorce case or any other reason.
However, the family claimed that Brishti had been suffering from mental depression for the last four-five years and was under treatment. Recently she used to stay almost alone in her own room.
Police have informed that the actual cause of death will be confirmed only after the investigation.
