Man hacked to death for protesting against granddaughter's harassment

A man has been hacked to death in Jashore's Monirampur upazila for allegedly protesting against the harassment of his granddaughter.

A case has been filed in this connection naming 11 people while the police have arrested one.

The deceased mason, Enamul Hossain, 45, used to live in Jhikargachha upazila. But, he often visited his granddaughter's house in Monirampur regularly.

The deceased's nephew, Saddam Hossain, said that a youth named Rabbi, 23, made an objectionable proposal to the ninth-grade daughter of one of Enamul's nieces. When the matter was reported to local public representatives and dignitaries, Rabbi became angry. A scuffle broke out between the two parties over this. Later, the family alleged that Enamul was threatened with death.

According to relatives, on Monday night around 9 pm, some people including Rabbi attacked Enamul Hossain on his way home from the market and hacked him.

He was later rescued and first taken to the Jhikargachha Upazila Health Complex. When his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Jashore General Hospital. After reaching there, the doctor declared him dead.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Monirampur Police Station Abu Sayeed said that it was initially learned that Enamul Hossain was hacked to death for protesting against the harassment of his granddaughter. The deceased's wife Reshma Khatun has filed a case in this incident, naming 11 people. One accused has already been arrested. An operation is underway to arrest the other accused.
