Massive earthquake triggers Tsunami waves across Russia, Japan, and US
A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday (July 30), triggering tsunami waves that reached parts of Russia, Japan, and the United States, including Hawaii and the California coast.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, reports Al Jazeera.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake occurred 136km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at 8:25am (local time). It is among the strongest earthquakes recorded in the region in recent years.
The U.S. National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued tsunami warnings for parts of the Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii, southern Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and the California coast. Waves as high as 1.3 metres (4.5 feet) were observed in Port San Luis, California, while Kahului, Hawaii recorded waves of 45cm (1.5 feet) and Hilo Bay registered 30cm (1 foot).
In Russia’s Sakhalin region, at least three tsunami waves flooded parts of Severo-Kurilsk, prompting a full evacuation of the port town's approximately 2,500 residents. Regional Governor Valery Limarenko said all residents were safely relocated to higher ground. Emergency services remain on high alert, and a fish processing plant in the town was also flooded, with all staff evacuated.
Further south, 60 people were rescued from a surf camp on Khalaktyrsky Beach in Kamchatka, near the earthquake’s epicenter. Footage from the scene showed evacuees boarding trucks with emergency gear.
In Japan, the Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings for parts of the eastern coast of Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, forecasting waves up to 3 metres (9.8 feet). Authorities in Taiwan, the Philippines, and other Pacific nations also issued coastal warnings.
While U.S. and Canadian officials confirmed no major tsunami threat to their wider Pacific coastlines, localized surges were reported. In Los Angeles, the National Weather Service described a “fast and damaging wave” at Port San Luis, rapidly shifting the tide in minutes. Residents were warned to stay away from flooded areas, as further waves could arrive over the next 24 hours.
In Honolulu, local officials urged coastal evacuations, warning that tsunami waves could reach the islands within hours. Though tsunami warnings have since been downgraded or lifted in some areas—including Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Wailea on Maui—authorities stressed continued caution due to the risk of recurring waves and strong currents.
Emergency services across affected regions remain on standby, and officials continue to assess potential infrastructure damage.
