Matal Rajjak Dewan's 93rd birth anniversary celebrated at TSC

The 93rd birth anniversary of the mystic poet and folk singer Matal Rajjak Dewan was celebrated at Sanjib Chattar of Dhaka University's Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on Thursday afternoon (August 27). The programme was organised by the Dhaka University-based cultural organisation 'Hurricane'.

Family members of Matal Rajjak Dewan, his disciples, musicians and devotees from across the country attended the celebration. His life, philosophy and music were discussed and remembered at the event.

At the programme, Nasima Dewan, wife of Matal Rajjak Dewan, said, "I do not know how to read or write. My only 'education' was serving Matal, which I have done all my life. Matal is no longer with us, but his songs remain. We arrange Matal's songs at our home every year, but I am delighted that this year it is being held at Dhaka University."

Abdul Hai Dewan, a disciple of Matal Rajjak, said he had travelled from afar to attend the programme on his guru. He remarked that Matal Rajjak spoke powerful words, which is why he is discussed both at home and abroad. He added that the artiste will live on forever among people through his music.

After evening, the second part of the programme featured a session of songs composed by Matal Rajjak Dewan, performed by his disciples, devotees and various artistes.

Naim Hossain, an audience member, said Matal Rajjak's songs reflect various aspects of human spirituality, separation and everyday life. He felt such an event at Dhaka University should have been organised earlier.

Mahbub Khalasi, organiser of 'Hurricane', said their initiative stems from a desire to work with the philosophy of Bauls, fakirs and mahajans of Bengal. Musician Boga Taleb also expressed joy at being able to organise an event dedicated to an artiste of Matal Rajjak's stature.

The musical segment featured performances by Akash Gayen, Khokon Chishti, Maruf Mrinmoy, Boga Taleb, Nabin Kishore Goswami and Adhari Milon, along with disciples and devotees of Matal Rajjak Dewan.

Matal Rajjak Dewan is known as a mystic poet and folk singer in the Baul tradition. His songs and philosophy encompass humanism, mysticism, human life, spirituality, separation and various aspects of social reality. Through this celebration, an initiative was taken to introduce his songs and philosophy to the new generation.
