Mbappé magic puts Les Bleus ahead on the stroke of half-time
Kylian Mbappé came to the rescue for France just as the first half looked destined to end in a frustrating stalemate, firing Les Bleus into a 1-0 lead against a resilient Sweden in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash.
After struggling to truly open up a highly disciplined Swedish backline for the opening forty minutes, Didier Deschamps’ men began moving through the gears late in the half. The pressure finally told in the forty-fifth minute.
Following an earlier scare where Mbappé had a spectacular goal disallowed for offside via a VAR check, the French captain made no mistake on the brink of the interval, cleanly finding the back of the net to completely alter the complexion of the match.
Sweden's rigid shape limited space beautifully for much of the opening period, forcing France into horizontal possession without much penetration.
Just as the Swedish team was desperate to hear the half-time whistle, France earned a corner via Michael Olise. Amidst mounting momentum, the ball fell to Mbappé, who buried his chance to send the French contingent into raptures at the MetLife Stadium.
Sweden now faces an uphill battle in the second half, forced to abandon their deep-lying defensive strategy to chase an equalizer against the European giants.
