Mbappe makes history by winning Golden Boot in two consecutive World Cups

Even though France could not win the title, Kylian Mbappe once again proved his excellence in world football with his individual performance. By winning the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot, he has become the first footballer to win the top goalscorer award in two consecutive World Cups.

In this World Cup held in the United States, Mbappe scored 10 goals in eight matches. As a result, he surpassed Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who scored eight goals, to claim the top goalscorer award.

Earlier, Mbappe had won the Golden Boot at the 2022 Qatar World Cup with eight goals. By adding another 10 goals this time, the 27-year-old achieved a unique feat by winning this prestigious award for the second consecutive time.

With a brace against England in the third-place play-off, Mbappe took his total World Cup goals to 22. With this, he moved to the top of the all-time World Cup goalscorers' list. Lionel Messi is second with 21 goals.

Additionally, Mbappe became the first footballer since West Germany legend Gerd Muller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup.

Only two footballers have scored more goals in a single World Cup than Mbappe. France's Just Fontaine scored 13 in 1958, and Hungary's Sandor Kocsis scored 11 in 1954.

In this World Cup, Mbappe scored braces against Senegal and Iraq in the group stage. He then added goals against Paraguay in the round of 16, Morocco in the quarter-finals, and another brace against England in the third-place play-off to finish the tournament with 10 goals.

On the other hand, Lionel Messi had the opportunity to surpass Mbappe in the final against Spain if he could score a hat-trick. However, the Argentine captain failed to find the net in that match, ending his World Cup campaign with eight goals.

In the top goalscorers' list for this World Cup, Mbappe is followed by Lionel Messi (8), Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland (7 each), and Ousmane Dembele and Harry Kane (6 each).
