Mbappe makes World Cup history with back-to-back scoring feat
France forward Kylian Mbappe has added another remarkable chapter to FIFA World Cup history, becoming the first player ever to score eight or more goals in consecutive World Cup tournaments.
After claiming the Golden Boot with eight goals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Mbappe has reached the same milestone at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, setting a record unmatched in the tournament's 96-year history.
Since the inaugural World Cup in 1930, 7,295 players have featured in at least one World Cup match. Among them, only nine players had managed to score eight or more goals in a single edition of the tournament.
Mbappe has now gone a step further by repeating the feat in back-to-back World Cups—an achievement never before accomplished by any player.
The French captain's consistency on football's biggest stage has further cemented his place among the game's all-time greats, with his latest milestone standing as one of the rarest individual records in World Cup history.
With France still in the hunt for the 2026 title, Mbappe now has the opportunity to extend both his tournament tally and his historic record.
