State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque has said that previous governments engaged in mega corruption under the guise of development, leaving sports infrastructure in a dilapidated state.

He made the remarks while visiting Sylhet District Stadium on Wednesday (April 1).

The stadium was visited ahead of the nationwide talent search programme ‘Notun Kuri Sports’, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on April 30 in Sylhet.

The initiative targets children aged 12–14 across seven events, including football and cricket, in 64 districts. Selected participants will receive special sports scholarships.

Haque directed officials and the district administration to immediately renovate the stadium to make it fit for sports activities. He also highlighted the government’s ongoing measures for athletes’ welfare, including sports allowances and cards, which have already benefitted 129 national-level players, with 500 more expected to join within a week.

The minister stressed that sports will be made compulsory from grade four from the next academic year to foster talent nationwide.
