Mejbaur Rahman Sumon's 'Roid' nominated for Oscars

The film 'Roid', directed by Mejbaur Rahman Sumon, is going to compete on behalf of Bangladesh in the 'International Feature Film' category of the 99th Academy Awards (Oscar), the most prestigious event in world cinema. The film was finally nominated based on lengthy analysis and a unanimous decision of the 'Oscar Bangladesh Committee' formed on the initiative of the Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies (BFFS).

The nomination was officially announced at a press conference held at a five-star hotel in the capital on Sunday morning, September 27. Chairman of the Oscar Bangladesh Committee and President of BFFS, Dr Mohammad Zahirul Islam, announced the name of 'Roid' as the final film at the press conference.

According to a statement from the committee, a total of five films were submitted by the deadline of September 16, 2026, for participation in the 99th Oscar. They are: Redwan Roni's 'Dom', Mejbaur Rahman Sumon's 'Roid', Nurul Alam Atique's 'Manusher Bagan', Mohammad Tauqir Islam's 'Delupi' and Monirul Akash Haque's 'The University of Chankharpul'.

Later, when 'Manusher Bagan' voluntarily withdrew from the competition, it was decided to send 'Roid' to the Oscars from among the remaining four films, considering various aspects.

In the six-member Oscar Bangladesh Committee led by Dr Zahirul Islam Kachi, the other members serving are Sazzad Sharif, Shahin Dil-Riaz, Rashed Zaman, Saiyid Shahzada Al Karim and Shahrin Akter Sumi. Through this nomination, the organisers expressed hope that the film will represent Bangladesh's film industry and cultural identity gloriously on the world stage and win the hearts of international audiences.
