Men's hockey team suffers first defeat to Sri Lanka in 20 years
Bangladesh’s men’s hockey team suffered a rare defeat against Sri Lanka, going down 3-2 in the Asian Games qualifying tournament in Thailand on Friday (April 3), marking their first loss to the island nation since 2006.
Sri Lanka took an early lead in the sixth minute, before Bangladesh’s Ashraful equalised from a penalty stroke in the first quarter. The visitors regained the lead early in the second quarter and extended it to 3-1 within the first four minutes of the final quarter. Amirul scored from a penalty corner, reducing the deficit to 3-2, but Bangladesh failed to find an equaliser in the remaining 11 minutes.
Despite earning six penalty corners, Bangladesh converted only one, while Sri Lanka failed to score from their sole opportunity.
Post-match, Bangladesh coach Atikuzzaman acknowledged defensive lapses and fatigue from consecutive hot-weather matches, taking responsibility for the loss.
With this result, Bangladesh faces a challenging path to the semifinals and Asian Games qualification, needing a significant win against Uzbekistan in their final group match to secure advancement.
