Mentally unstable woman accused of killing elderly mother in Manikganj

A mentally unstable woman has been accused of hacking her elderly mother to death in Harirumpur upazila, Manikganj. Police have detained the accused daughter.

The incident occurred around 10:30 am on Tuesday, June 9, in the Middle Dhushuria village of Gala union. The deceased has been identified as Rezia Begum, 95, wife of late Sobhan of the same village. The accused is her daughter, Rokeya Begum, 60, wife of late Malek of Hatipara area in Manikganj Sadar upazila.

According to police and local sources, Rokeya attacked her mother with a meat cleaver, causing severe injuries. Rezia died on the spot. After the incident, Rokeya informed her nephew Russell, son of her elder brother Mofazzal Hossain, that her grandmother had died. Relatives and neighbours rushed to the house and found Rezia's bloodied body on a cot, causing panic in the area.

Locals said Rokeya had been suffering from mental instability for a long time after her husband's death, often displaying abnormal behaviour.

Harirumpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Afzal Hossain said the body has been sent to Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Rokeya has been detained, and legal action is being taken.
