Lionel Messi brought the curtain down on his remarkable 21-year international career in an emotional farewell at Buenos Aires’ iconic Monumental Stadium, where 85,000 fans gathered to celebrate one of Argentina’s greatest footballers.

Wearing the famous sky-blue and white shirt for the 208th and final time, the 39-year-old scored from the penalty spot as Argentina cruised to a 3-0 victory over Benin. The goal was Messi’s 126th for his country, but on a night defined by emotion, the result was almost secondary to the farewell of the Argentine icon.

The emotion began before kickoff. Messi was visibly moved as he saw thousands of supporters lining the streets while the team bus made its way to the stadium. He later walked onto the pitch with his three children, while his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and mother, Celia Cuccittini, watched from the stands. He struggled to hold back tears during the national anthem.

The stadium erupted in tribute throughout the match. Fans unfurled a giant No. 10 banner bearing the word “Gracias,” while the 10th minute brought a prolonged standing ovation in honour of Argentina’s legendary No. 10. Messi then added the perfect final touch, converting a penalty in the 71st minute.

Messi’s international journey was marked by heartbreak, fierce criticism and moments when his relationship with the national team appeared close to breaking point. But he ultimately transformed that pain into one of football’s greatest redemption stories, leading Argentina to Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024 and, most significantly, the 2022 World Cup.

From Rosario to the pinnacle of world football, Messi leaves Argentina’s national team as a champion, record scorer and enduring symbol of a golden era. His international chapter may be over, but his legacy in the sky-blue and white will live on for generations.
