Messi makes first public appearance since international retirement

Lionel Messi has made his first public appearance since announcing his retirement from international football, spending time with his family in Florida before watching his children play for an Inter Miami youth team.

The Argentina great was spotted in the stands alongside his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, as his children took part in a youth match.

Dressed casually and without shoes, Messi was seen holding his trademark mate cup.

Messi’s appearance came days after he announced on social media that he was ending his chapter with the Argentina national team.

Although he has frequently been seen with his family in Florida since joining Inter Miami in 2023, the outing carried added significance following his retirement announcement on August 31.

His decision has sparked speculation over whether he could make one final appearance in Argentina’s colours before officially closing the door on his international career.

Argentina are planning a series of friendly matches during the next international window from September 21 to October 6, with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) reportedly preparing to host two or three games at home.

The AFA has yet to officially announce a farewell match for Messi, although Argentine media have reported that Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Rosario are being considered as possible venues.

Opponents have not yet been confirmed, according to AFA.

Tributes to Messi have already begun across Argentine football. Organisers are planning to stop matches in the country’s 11-a-side football, futsal and beach soccer competitions for one minute after the 10-minute mark of the first half, allowing players, officials and fans to applaud the Argentina captain.

The tribute was already observed during the Copa Argentina clash between Boca Juniors and Velez Sarsfield, with fans in the stands waving flags and singing and chanting in Messi’s honour.
